Join Julia in her studio for a behind-the-scenes look at her vibrant textiles and artwork. Visitors are invited to explore a colourful collection of screen and block-printed textiles, and browse original drawings and paintings. You will find bold florals, abstract forms and a rich use of colour throughout her work, all inspired by her garden and love of the natural world.
You will see Julia’s creative process in action, learn about her tools and techniques and hear the stories behind the patterns and prints. A demonstration of block printing will show how a simple technique can be used to produce creative design ideas and you can try out the process on your own bandana.
Enjoy a relaxed, welcoming space where you can chat with the artist, shop directly from the studio and discover how ideas come to life through cloth, paper and print. Situated on a North Canberra block, the studio sits in an established garden where visitors can see the inspiration behind Julia’s prints and paintings.

Julia Raath is a textile print designer with a long-standing practice that blends commercial design, studio-based experimentation, and extensive experience in design education. Her creative work is driven by a strong command of colour, composition and print techniques and her current focus is on producing limited-edition textiles using printing blocks made from repurposed materials. She also spends time painting still life arrangements using gouache and water colours.
She has created commercial prints for fashion and homewares, delivered private commissions through her studio Surfaced, and collaborated with a fair-trade organisation in India on design and product development. Alongside this, she has held significant roles in design education, including introducing new curriculum initiatives at UTS and coordinating Textile Design and Development at RMIT.
