The chair is humble, tenacious, cozy, rigorous. It may demand little of its occupier, yet a lifetime from its maker. It may be object-of-comfort, amuse-oeil, vessel. In Canberra, as in the outside world, all of these are true. And within any one practice which takes on the object, there is no singular chair aside from the next: Each time one of us starts again anew or revised, pen to paper, extruding along a curve, putting metal to metal or wood to wood, there is an utterance, from the depths of the primordial wilderness like an ache, “just one more chair”.
With Take A Seat, Australian National Capital Artists Incorporated brings together a range of interpretations of the chair from across the spectrum of Canberra’s art, craft and design practices to shed light on our local creative ecology. To place a chair in a gallery is dissent. To make a chair that is an artwork is dissent. To make an object that lasts in an age marked by disposability is dissent. The urge to make another chair when the world is surely saturated is dissent.

ANCA Inc. was founded in 1989 with a mission of securing funding for art production and presentation facilities – the first organisation of its kind in Canberra. ANCA was the recipient of a federal grant that allowed the organisation to purchase land and construct two purpose-built artist studio campuses. Today, through many changes and iterations, ANCA is the largest affordable studio organisation in the ACT and is a vital artery for creative practice in the region.
