The SoA&D Design Hub Open Studio presents a selection of student and staff experiments and research, treating Canberra as a shared city and inviting visitors to see design as a way of paying attention, repairing relations and imagining other ways of living together.
The ANU School of Art and Design will open the doors of the Design Hub and share projects such as speculative fashion futures, planned relocation, architecture as habitat, experimental drawing and advanced digital fabrication methods. As an open studio event, the Design Hub invites members of the public to participate in methods of experimental design, engage with demonstrations, and hear from design staff and students about their research and practice. Works range from data-driven visualisations and glass experiments to modest, species-specific habitat structures from the Habitecture studio, which consider how urban design might also support hollow-nesting native fauna.
These projects illustrate the School of Art and Design's approach to design as intentionally undisciplined, stepping away from a traditional focus on objects for market contexts. Instead, design practices are shaped as real-world critical interventions or experimental speculations that examine complex presents and uncertain futures.

The Design Hub at the ANU School of Art & Design is a teaching and research studio where designers and researchers work across wood, glass, ceramics, textiles, bio-design, digital practice, drawing and spatial design. We are interested in letting digital and traditional processes become intertwined where the materiality of code, fabric, microbes and metals can inform one another in practice.
