EXHIBITION OPENING EVENT | MONDAY 9 NOVEMBER, 6PMCreated by University of Canberra design students in collaboration with Miko Designs, Break // Make: UC x Miko is a body of work exploring the theme of ‘Dissent’ exhibited at Miko Designs in Fyshwick.
This Canberra-based, multidisciplinary project provides an opportunity for students to engage with key Festival themes, redefining craft and architecture, blending tradition with contemporary techniques and materials, integrating technology and sustainability and breaking boundaries to challenge conventional ideas of art, design and urbanism. Students explore ideas of comfort or care and how that relates to issues within Canberra and broader society.

Translating from Japanese as ‘beautiful child’, Miko is truly a family business. Miko Designs is an ongoing creative journey for Stephanie and Stu. Their path has been diverse and colourful, ranging from a lively stint in puppetry, travels through overseas galleries, meticulous kerning in QuarkXPress and cutting film. Each experience has shaped what Miko represents today, culminating in the opening of their Canberra showroom in 2018.
Inspired by endless creative possibilities and other’s creative processes, Miko values conceptual and experimental art and design, underpinned by common principles of design applied across disciplines.
Miko is now a unique curation of furniture that inspires, blending styles from mid-century modern to Scandinavian. Dedicated to cultivating a culture of quality design, creativity and innovation, Miko provides a platform and opportunities for local creatives in Canberra and across Australia. Miko’s vision is to collaborate with designers who share a commitment to ethical and sustainable practices and craft enduring, timeless pieces designed to last a lifetime, rather than contributing to the cycle of mass-produced, disposable items.
