EXHIBITION OPENING EVENT | MONDAY 9 NOVEMBER, 6PM

Elder Art is a community exhibition celebrating the creativity, lived experience and cultural knowledge of older people in the region. Featuring visual art, design, sculpture, storytelling and elder-led talks, the program honours the richness of long life and the many ways elders shape our cultural fabric.

Responding to the theme of ‘Dissent’, the exhibition highlights how elders’ voices are often diminished in contemporary society. Through their artworks and personal stories, participating elders challenge ageism and reclaim their place as holders of wisdom, history and design knowledge.

The program features significant local elders. The late Connie Colleen Cameron OAM, founder of Heritage Arts Promotions Incorporated (HAPI), is represented through three live-sized sculptures she created with residents of George Forbes House in the final year of their lives, now housed at The Hive as moving reflections on ageing, creativity and belonging.

Acclaimed poet and academic Keith Harrison will present a literary talk on dissent, language and lived experience. Dr Aunty Matilda House, Ngambri-Ngunnawal elder and patron of HAPI will share cultural knowledge, reflect on Country and speak to dissent from a First Nations perspective.

Hosted at the Queanbeyan Hive, a restored c.1910 George Hudson kit home with original pressed tin walls, ceilings and polished timber floors, the exhibition sits within a venue recognised with the 2019 Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council Heritage Award for Best Restoration. The Hive’s unique design heritage and intimate gallery spaces make it an ideal site for a festival honouring design.

Delivered by Create Collaborate Collective Inc., the program fosters inclusion, intergenerational exchange and community connection. Some sessions will be recorded to contribute to local cultural history.

Elder Art invites audiences to listen deeply, reflect thoughtfully and celebrate the creative legacy of our elders.
