Canvas House is conceived as a restrained architectural framework, a neutral backdrop for life to unfold. Drawing from the clarity of Scandinavian minimalism and the proportion and rhythm of French provincial architecture, the design reinterprets both traditions within the context of Canberra’s post-war suburban fabric.
Defined by mature oak trees and views to Black Mountain, the house responds foremost to neighbourhood life. Morning coffee in the garden, afternoons on the porch with neighbours and connection to the Red Hill walking trail. The home is organised as two dark hip pavilions linked by two large ‘bay openings’ onto a central outdoor living courtyard. Achieving a 7.1-star rating, the fully electric house integrates passive solar design, high-performance insulation, recyclable materials, solar power and rainwater harvesting.
