Explore Art Deco design and Canberra’s identity as a city of design with Canberra artist Sarit Cohen. Inspired by Modernism and the theme of dissent, this hands-on workshop invites you to experiment with colour, pattern and composition to create a ceramic piece that reflects your own perspective on place.
You will begin with a brief introduction to Art Deco design, exploring its bold geometric forms and distinctive visual language. You will then create your own decorative composition by applying underglaze decals to a bisque-fired ceramic cup. Choose from a selection of provided geometric decal designs or incorporate your own patterns as you develop a unique response to Canberra’s design identity.
Sarit will guide you through each stage of the process, demonstrating techniques for applying decals and finishing your work with a clear glaze. Your completed cup will be fired at Sarit’s studio and returned to you approximately one week after the workshop.

Sarit Cohen is a graduate of the ANU School of Art (Ceramics). She completed her Diploma of Education at the University of Canberra and in this period was awarded the Doug Alexander Memorial Award for Decorative Surface. Recently she has received an honorary mention at the 13th International Ceramics Festival in Mino Japan. She has completed residencies in Denmark, Switzerland, China and Japan. These opportunities have significantly contributed to her work in the areas of porcelain manipulation and casting. She has contributed to numerous group and survey shows over the last 20 years, both nationally and internationally, notably in the USA, Denmark, Hungary and Japan. Her works are held in private and public collections in these countries. Cohen’s work bears the influence of her childhood spent in Israel, and of her Turkish and Indian heritage. Her memories of the desert, its surfaces and dry atmosphere are constantly evidenced in her objects. Together with an increasing curiosity about her Indian background, these form the basis of her research.
She says of her work ‘I feel very much rooted in ceramic history and I am very devoted to and dependent on my material and love the physical part of the whole process with clay and firing.’
